Frequently Asked Questions

Our organizers are happy to answer any questions you may have. If you want a quick answer, here are some frequently asked questions

If you are at a non-union workplace, and you would like to see improvements made there you can unionize that workplace with your coworkers. This is great for people who like their coworkers and workplace, but struggle with specific issues.

If you are an experienced ironworker and there are work opportunities in your area there may be open jobs that you could apply for.

Unionizing your employer in B.C. is a fairly simple process:

1) Talk with your coworkers about unionizing, and what it could mean for them

2) Sign confidential union cards indicating you want to unionize, and ask coworkers to

3) Once 55% or more of the employees have signed cards the union applies for certification

4) The BCLRB will assess the support level, and will certify the union if there is more than 55%

5) If there is less than 55% but more than 45% the BCLRB will order a secret ballot vote

Ironworkers union representatives will work with the employees to form a bargaining committee. This committee will identify priorities for bargaining, and the union and employer will negotiate a collective agreement.

Employers will often challenge the union's application for certification but you can rest assured there is an experienced organizing team and legal counsel working in your best interests.

Employers can be subject to unfair labour practice complaints if they break established rules around how to behave during a union campaign.

Employers may do things to intimidate or retaliate against union supporters, but they aren't allowed to and there are stiff consequences if it is proven to have occurred.

Our representatives all come from the tools or shop floor, and we understand your workplace and working conditions. With local unions representing members at hundreds of unionized contractors across Western Canada, you can trust that you are being represented by experts, who know the industry inside and out.
